We nicknamed these part the battleships. As we do with many of our projects, the likeness gave the part it’s name. This was a particularly challenging endeavor. Cut from a solid piece of titanium, we prepared the part for machining by cutting a close outline via waterjet. Using a probing system to accurately locate the material, we then cut a dovetail and locating slot in the material to facilitate complete machining. From there, held by the dovetail, the part was finished on all sides using a five axis approach. The dovetail was whittled down to a .01 thickness and finally removed by bandsaw and the remaining nub blended into by deburr.
